Working at SBUX there's a whole lotta people I get to chat with. The more they need their caffeine the more info I tend to get out of them. I find out where they are from, where they are going and why they are here (in Bellingham).
One particular couple moved here from England. Here! Little Bellingham! I asked the husband why (out of all the places to move to in The States) Bellingham? I mean, Calfornia has sun and beaches, the East coast has great sports teams and cool accents and the Mid-West ... is really flat. Why would you choose Bellingham? He looked at me confused-- almost offended. "Why wouldn't we choose Bellingham?" he tossed back at me, "you've got the mountains over here, the Puget Sound over there, its perfect!"
Upon reflection, I realized that I was asking this question at the tail end of our long winter. Just about the time when I ask myself every day, "Why don't we live on an island in the Pacific (oh, happy Asian/Pacific Islander month)?" All this to say... the photo below is a reminder. A reminder that Bellingham summers are stupid. A good stupid. The kind of 'stupid' that other folks not in the Northwest look at and jealously call our 16 hours of daylight and 9pm sunsets stupid.
